"Cedar was already a small community when the Manistee and Northeastern Railroad came through about 1899. It originally had been called Cedar City, but the name was shortened to Cedar. The name was chosen because of the vast growth of cedar in the vicinity." - Referenced in Vintage Views of Leelanau County, by Byron & Wilson.

Historical Sketch
Through 40 years of homesteading the Leelanau Peninsula, migration found its last permanent settlement near the county's southern border. In 1895 Cedar became actively engaged in lumbering. There were four mills sending out cedar logs and finished lumber. Barrel staves and hoops were produced for the making of nails kegs, packing barrels, and salted fish storage. By 1910 lumbering decreased and the community turned to farming for a livelihood.
