Visit Maple City you'll see why it is named for one of Michigan's most abundant trees—the sugar maple which yields our delicious maple syrup.
Maple City
Est. 1866

Maple City is located 14 miles south of Leland, and 16 miles northwest of Traverse City. Maple City serves the Traverse Lake, Lime Lake and Sugar Loaf communities.

Sugar Loaf... this extremely interesting mountain-like hill is officially recorded as being the highest point in Lower Michigan. Its elevation is a trifle over 800 feet, and it gets its name from the fact that its pinnacle is shaped like a loaf of sugar. It particularly takes this form in winter, when it is covered with glistening snow. The view from Mt. Sugar Loaf is wide and expansive and takes in some of the most beautiful and scenic countryside of Leelanau County.

From Mt. Sugar Loaf one can see Lime Lake, Traverse Lake, Bass Lake, Shell Lake and Lake Michigan. These lakes are all perfect gems of beauty, with sandy beaches and heavily wooded shores. In the waters of these lakes, some of the best fishing in Michigan is to be had.

Towering above the blue waters of Lake Michigan, North and South Manitou Islands and the Fox Islands can be seen. On a clear day the much farther away Beaver Islands are plainly discernable, and nearer by, beautiful Pyramid Point, on the shores of Lake Michigan.

Mt. Sugar Loaf is well worth the climb on any clear day, and the view from its lofty height will always remain a cherished memory of Leelanau County." - Referenced in Vintage Views of Leelanau County, by Byron & Wilson.

Historical Sketch
Just after 1910 the first automobile arrived in the county. George W. Fralick was Maple City's first doctor, as well as the first county resident to own a horseless carriage. As more people took cash crops to Traverse City and came home with their own Model T's and Model A's, it was evident that modern times had come to Leelanau County. An evening ride around Maple City proper passed the former site of the factory that made wooden shoe pegs, which had, in 1866, brought the first settlers and the early name of Peg Town.
