"The slender tip of the Leelanau Peninsula is just enough room for Northport. A small town that seems destined to stay that way. This is a sliver of paradise-where the cinnamon twists are warm, people sing in the park, and there's always time for sail." - Traverse, Northern Michigan's Magazine.
Northport
Est. 1850

Beautifully situated on the eastern side of the Leelanau peninsula and on the shore of Grand Traverse Bay, Northport is close to Traverse City (28 miles), but a world away.

"The location of Northport is interesting and peculiar. The harbor is one of the most commodious on the lakes. The village is built upon terraces, and has somewhat the look of a rural village in New England. The surrounding farming country is excellent, but limited in extent, as less than three miles distant to the west is the shore of Lake Michigan." -Traverse Region, Historical and Descriptive, 1884. Referenced in Vintage Views of Leelanau County by Byron & Wilson.

What's Best?
Strong community involvement by residents who value what we have here -a good school and medical facility, a performing arts center, an indoor pool and fitness center, and an historic lighthouse.

Where to Meet Locals?
At Barb's Bakery very early every morning. At Woody's where farmers, fisherman and the occasional celeb mingle. At the pancake breakfast & fly-in at Woolsey Airport. And, at the Mill Pond opening day of trout season.

About the School District
Northport Public School is a K-12 school with 276 students located in the village. The district covers 45 square miles, serving Northern Leelanau County.

Historical Sketch
Northport was originally called Waukazooville, after Chief Peter Waukazoo, who with the Reverend George Smith brought 40 or 50 Native American families to Leelanau from southwest Michigan's Black River in 1848!
